Out of Europe
One Lucky Family's Survival Route from Belgium to America

In this atypically celebratory Holocaust portrait, extraordinary luck and coincidence guide a large family of Belgian Jewish diamond merchants and activists as they flee Nazi occupied Europe in 1940. Their survival route takes them through France, Spain, and Portugal, and finally, to America. In a twist of fate, one of them is sent back to Europe to help liberate Dachau.
(55 minutes, documentary)

“A fascinating tale of perseverance and extraordinary luck, providing a captivating view of WWII as seen through the extraordinary lives of seemingly ordinary people who embarked on a dangerous peripatetic odyssey for their survival. Inspiring as well as informative.”

“Well edited and unfailing interesting....The classical film score...is both appropriate and exhilarating....Out of Europe, unlike many Holocaust documentaries, leaves you with a sense of hope and optimism. I highly recommend Out of Europe to synagogue education services, Jewish and Holocaust study programs at the college and university level, WWII history classes and large public libraries. It is surely one of the best and most personal documentaries of its type.”

“An outstanding documentary that features articulate people, some now in their eighties, recounting their childhood exodus as if it were yesterday. You feel as if you are there with them. I recommend it for just about everyone. At times funny, at times tearful, and always peeling away layers of history with wonderful images and music.”

"This excellent film shows how one large Jewish family was able barely to escape the Holocaust. This well-crafted documentary will be especially appreciated by students first learning about the Holocaust; laypersons will be fascinated as well."
